High speed bicycle path gets branch to Brussels Airport
Only 1% of people working at Belgium’s international airport in Zaventem come to work by bicycle today. That’s why Brussels Airport together with local authorities and the Flemish Region, wants to invest in an extra exit, a branch on the existing F3 Leuven-Brussels high speed bicycle path by 2019.
By 2040 Brussels Airport wants to double its freight and passenger capacity. This will create several thousand extra jobs, is expected. To avoid people being stuck in traffic jams every day, new transport means are planned.
Old railway track bed
The new branch on the bicycle highway will start at Nossegem and follow the old railway track bed towards the A201 to the airport. Works will start next year to be finished by 2019. Some 1 million euro is invested in it.
“Thanks to this new branch we can offer our employees a new, easy to use and safe route to the airport, not bothered by any other traffic”, Arnaud Feist, CEO of Brussels Airport says. With some 20.000 people working around the airport today, it’s a major employment pool.
