Dutch railways have to double capacity
Eringa pleads for a faster and more flexible railway network. “We want to avoid bottlenecks. If traffic is to double, we need more rails, for instance for depots.”
Railway professor and consultant Rolf Dollevoet of the technical university of Delft confirms the need to prepare the Dutch railways for the future. Apart from more intelligent trains Dollevoet recommends to separate intercity trains and local trains to improve the flow.
And he foresees major improvements for travelers such as an app to consult the actual means of transport. “Thanks to a better synergy between train, tram, bus, taxi and bicycle traveling from A to B will become faster and cheaper”, Dollevoet says.
