Scancar also to check parking tickets in Antwerp
The city of Antwerp wants to bring up to date their parking policy. As from 2019 scan cars with ANPR technology (automatic number plate recognition) will also be used to check car parking tickets.
1.200 number plates an hour
This technology is already being used in the Netherlands and in 2019 this scan cars will also be used in Antwerp. They are able to register 1.200 number plates to compare them with the database of the cars who have paid for their parking space. As from 2019 Antwerp wants to introduce this system because then the contract with car park company Apcoa ends.
According to Koen Kennis, alderman for mobility (N-VA): “The city of Antwerp must become a smart city with more technology. A lot of people already pay by apps or SMS and make less use of cash. We want to coordinate the hardware and the software tot manage our parking policy.” Also halve of the car parking ticket machines will disappear. Today it is unclear which company will deliver the future hardware and software.
Car-park attendants can stay
Car-park attendants must not fear for their job. When a scancar registers a car without a valid car parking ticket, the attendant will be sent to the spot for a visual confirmation. With this technology, a larger area can be monitored and the city can lay stress on illegal parked drivers.
