Wallonia: more accidents than average on August 15th due to alcohol
According the Walloon Road Safety Agency (AWSR), August 15th is one of the year’s most accident-prone days. It is also the day with the biggest number of accidents due to alcohol.
“We see systematically a peak in the proportion of accidents with injuries linked to alcohol on national holidays in Wallonia. During the 2007-2016 period, the proportion of accidents with injuries on August 15th was 19%” compared to a national average of 13%”.
“It means that about one out of five accidents that happened on August 15th in the last ten years was caused by alcohol”, explains the AWSR. All causes combined, 329 accidents happened on the 15th last ten years, or an average of 33 per year. The number for a normal, average day is 29.
More drunk driving in Wallonia
Walloons seem more prone to taking the wheel after having a few drinks. “In 2016, drunk driving caused 14% of accidents in Wallonia against 11% for the whole country”, says the AWSR.
“This year, the 15th is a Tuesday and some will be on holiday from Friday 11th already. These days also risk to generate an important traffic flow. Ingredients are all there for a dangerous cocktail”, alerts Patric Derweduwen AWSR’s managing direction.
