Roadworks to enlarge E42 will last for one year
The E42 motorway section between Andenne and Daussoulx will be enlarged to three lanes of traffic in both ways. Roadworks will start on September 28th and will take up to one year.
“After the transformation to three lanes of this 15 km section, 92% of the 140 km Walloon motorway will have three lanes”, rejoices Minister of Public Works and Mobility Carlo Di Antonio (cdH).
“Two sectors will still have only two and will stay that way because the current traffic doesn’t justify it”, he adds. The minister added that there will not be any fourth lane on this motorway, instead to counter the growing flow of transport vehicles, Wallonia will rather invest in commercial waterways and railways.
60.000 vehicles par day each way
Each day, 60.000 vehicles drive on the Andenne-Daussoulx motorway section, 6.000 of which are trucks. The 35 million euro roadworks will massively disrupt the traffic flow during one year depending on the weather.
To limit construction time, two teams of workers will build the new road day and night. The motorway police announces intense speed controls with Lidar systems and mobile radars.
Trucks stopping on the highway
“Because we loose the hard shoulder or that traffic flows on one available lane, every minor incident can paralyze the flow and cause traffic jams. Also, sometimes truck drivers stop just on the highway without any warning because they don’t want to exceed their driving time! We saw this happening during the Sambreville roadworkds”, explains Jean-Michel Tubetti, chief of Namur’s road police.
Vigilance will be increased at night. “Because at night, when there is less traffic, drivers have a tendency to drive way too fast”, adds the police chief, “but workers are still working on the roadworks and their safety is at stake”.
